Researchers from the Japan Agency for Water and Land Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and major engineering company IHI said they have found a way to extract gold from the water in hot springs.

Molten gold is found in magma at great depths below the Earth’s surface. This precious metal is believed to penetrate superheated hydrothermal water, slowly rise to the surface, and harden to form veins in the rocks.
Researchers believe the water in hot springs may contain gold. They noted that cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, could be used to remove metal. According to them, algae absorbs gold, separating it from chlorine and other elements.
The group transformed the algae into sheets that they then aged for seven months at a hot spring in northern Japan’s Akita Prefecture.
According to the members of the group, up to 1 ton of 30 grams of gold can be obtained from such plates. The world’s largest gold mines reportedly extract 3 to 5 grams of gold from a ton of ore. The group plans to conduct more experiments to create the technology.
