American scientists from the Livermore National Laboratory National Ignition Facility at the U.S. Department of Energy in Livermore, California, have successfully performed a nuclear fusion reaction for the first time, resulting in a net increase in energy.

As reported by Ukrinform, this is stated in the press release of the US Department of Energy.

“This is a remarkable achievement for researchers at the National Ignition Facility and staff who have dedicated their careers to making fusion ignition a reality, and this milestone will no doubt lead to further exploration,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.

The lab’s experiment exceeded the fusion threshold by delivering 2.05 megajoules (MJ) of energy to the target, resulting in a fusion energy output of 3.15 MJ, demonstrating for the first time the fundamental science basis of inertial fusion energy (IFE). .

It was noted that many advanced scientific and technological advances are still needed to achieve simple, affordable IFE to power homes and businesses, and the U.S. Department of Energy is currently relaunching a large-scale coordinated IFE program in the United States.

“Combined with private sector investment, there is great momentum for rapid progress towards the commercialization of fusion,” the press release said.

Fusion is a process in which two lighter nuclei transform into a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy.

As reported by Ukrinform, British scientists at the joint European JET tokamak have doubled their previous record in creating and maintaining thermonuclear fusion.
