Opera Software is expected to release a new update to its web browser in the rest of this week or next, but even if it does and doesn’t… why not implement a new and exciting feature introduced in the version it’s about to replace? Stranger things have happened.

The normal thing would be for them to wait until the release of Opera 94, the version based on Chromium 108, which will complete the launch cycle of browser derivatives that will be released this year. However, the Norwegian company is forging its own path for better and – unfortunately, more than desirable in recent years – for worse, and here’s Lucid Mod, ready to light up your Christmas if you’re an Opera user.

As presented, this Lucid mode or lucid mode “is a video sharpening feature that will make playback more enjoyable for you. It’s like having a crystal clear window into your favorite shows and movies. No more pixelated faces or blurry pictures!» Works on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter…

How does it happen with floating video, a clear mode button will appear next to it, when you hover over almost any playing or paused video, although it’s always disabled by default. And better this way, because even though lucid mode is evident in all videos, and there are some in which it is quite evident, it can have a detrimental effect. Or that’s my opinion after testing with videos of different types.

Essentially, this clear mode that Opera launches sharpens videos slightly increases brightness and not so slightly contrastso if you understand these concepts at least a little, you can already imagine where the problem is: at first everything looks clearer, yes, but after a few seconds you start to see the seams of everything, even the highest quality recordings.

The worst thing is that when you disable lucid mode, when you realize that it was not necessary or that it messed something up, the content that looked good before will now be blurry, or it will feel like it will give you less to the user in the first seconds, just because the difference in contrast between one mode and the other. And it, use it with caution, if at allbecause it’s dangerous.

What is this Lucid Mode, technically speaking? This is a CSS filter that is applied to video and image elements and that Opera has implemented to work on a click of a button. On most systems, the filter will also work alongside hardware acceleration if available, but it will still work. If you want to try it, you already know, in Opera 93 you have it.
