Referring to The Hill, Ukrinform reported that the vote took place on Wednesday.
“The bill to ban TikTok from government devices, submitted by Republican Senator Josh Hawley, was passed unanimously on Wednesday, meaning none of the senators objected to it,” the report states.
Legislation prohibits the downloading or use of TikTok on any device issued by the US or a government agency for official use.
“TikTok is a Trojan horse of the Chinese Communist Party. “This is a serious risk to the security of the United States,” said Senator Gowley, author of the bill. He also urged the Biden administration and Democrats to support this initiative.
The vote in the US Congress came after local governments in at least 13 states introduced similar bans.
The social network TikTok, based on the distribution of short videos, is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. Previously, Republican Senator Marco Rubio took the initiative to completely ban TikTok’s use in the US.
