NASA probe records strongest ‘Mars earthquake’

The American space agency NASA’s InSight probe recorded the strongest 4.7 magnitude earthquake ever on the Red Planet.

As reported by Ukrinform, New Atlas reported this.

“Marsquake,” designated S1222a, was recorded at magnitude 4.7 on May 4, according to NASA. The previous record was 4.2 points and was broken in August 2021.

“The energy released by this new earthquake is equivalent to the cumulative energy of any other earthquake we’ve seen to date. Although the event itself took place at a distance of more than 2,000 km, the waves recorded by InSight were so large that we nearly swept our seismometer,” said seismologist John Clinton, head of the InSight Earthquake Research Service. “They were overfed,” he said.

It is stated that this powerful earthquake has many other important features.

Notably, S1222a lasted at least four hours, more than double the duration of the previous longest earthquake. Moreover, it was the first “Mars earthquake” to send seismic waves to the entire surface of the Red Planet.

While most earthquakes produce either high-frequency or low-frequency surface waves, both types have been detected simultaneously for the first time.

As Ukrinform reported, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Perseverance rover recorded for the first time in history the sound of a “dust demon” – a hurricane that regularly forms on the surface of the Red Planet.
