The German Ministry of Defense, Airbus and the German Aerospace Center DLR jointly carried out the world’s first successful flight test demonstrator of the Remote Carrier UAV system based on the Airbus A400M cargo plane, as part of the development of the FCAS program. This was reported by the press service of Airbus on its official page.
The UAV launch device from a flying A400M was developed in just six months. For a test flight, it was loaded onto the Bundeswehr’s A400M launcher from which a modified Airbus Do-DT25 drone took off. After launch, the engines of the Do-DT25 drone were successfully started and continued to operate in flight mode. The crew on the A400M then handed control over to a ground operator who safely stopped the controls and landed the drone.
The successful test of an airborne launch of an unmanned aerial vehicle by Airbus was another stage in the development of a joint project of France, Germany and Spain to develop a new sixth-generation fighter under the FCAS program. Militarny previously reported on the new development phase of Europe’s largest defense-aerospace project of a next-generation fighter with an estimated cost of more than 100 billion euros.
Military transport aircraft such as the A400M will be an important component of the FCAS program: as drone carriers, they will bring the UAVs as close as possible to the areas of operation. New generation fighters will be able to perform joint combat sorties with semi-autonomous UAVs equipped with artificial intelligence.
FCAS
FCAS is a European next-generation aviation complex program developed by Dassault Aviation, Airbus, Indra Sistemas and Thales Group. In July 2017, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced their plans for FCAS, which will initially include a fighter jet and a range of related weapons.

The future complex will consist of a new 6th generation fighter, a next-generation weapon system (NGWS) and drones that will work with the aircraft in a single network. The promising sixth-generation jet fighter is expected to replace the existing French Rafale, German Typhoon and Spanish EF-18 Hornet around 2040. Source
