The Steam Deck was a complete success, and that was very important not just for Valve’s future in the hardware world, but also for everything it entails Steam OSthe operating system used by said console and one of its great pillars.
We were recently able to confirm that the Gab Newell-led company wants to support the development of Steam OS and that it aspires to improve its market position by turning the said operating system into option for all handheld console manufacturers who want to use it.
We also found out that Valve is starting work on the new Steam Deckalthough the information we had was scant, so we didn’t know if it was a successor to the current model, or if it would be more of a simple revision or intergenerational renewal with minor changes at the hardware level.
Thanks to an interview published by The Verge, we have new information about the next Steam Deck and we know that Valve does not conceive of it as a successor to the original model, that is, we would not face Steam Deck 2, but rather It would be an intergenerational renewal with minor improvements at the hardware level. To understand a little better, this would be an evolution similar to the one marked by the Nintendo Switch OLED.

Two of the big improvements that those responsible for the team behind Steam Deck want to introduce focus on battery and screen. A larger battery would improve autonomy and guarantee more hours of gaming, while the OLED screen would represent a significant leap in image quality and could help improve autonomy, as these types of panels have lower energy consumption than IPS models.
In terms of hardware, Valve believes this configuration is the “best possible” they’ll be able to offer for quite some time, which means we shouldn’t expect a Steam Deck 2 release anytime soon. That’s completely understandable and makes sense , as Valve will most likely wait for AMD new APU with Zen 4 CPU and Radeon RDNA3 GPU.
Valve also commented on other important details, such as the possibility of releasing a software update that gives the user the option set up and share profiles which allow you to set specific refresh rates, GPU frequencies and power consumption for each game. The company hasn’t forgotten either steam driver, and confirmed that he was considering releasing a revision of it.
