It looks like Samsung may finish work on its foldable OLED laptop and launch the product in 2023. The latest indication comes from a small detail in a report on the tech giant’s production plans. Note that HP is also preparing to launch its own foldable screen laptop from LG.

Samsung Electronics appears to have made significant progress in developing a laptop with a foldable screen. The new laptop will have a 17.3-inch panel manufactured by Samsung Display. In the closed state, the laptop will have the widest screen diagonal. There is speculation that the delay in the launch of these new laptop models may be due to the significant drop in worldwide demand for laptops. The prices of these foldable laptops are also a critical factor in evaluating models.

The recently released Asus ZenBook 17 Fold features a BOE-manufactured folding screen and retails for $3,500. The premium price means the laptop targets a new segment of the market. It was reported that only 10,000 of the panel were ordered from BOE. It is also speculated that HP’s upcoming foldable laptop will also be available in limited numbers.

It’s worth noting that unlike Asus and HP, which were outsourced to BOE and LG respectively, Samsung will manufacture the complex panel at its subsidiary. This could provide a cheaper foldable OLED laptop with a wider customer base.

Samsung’s future folding laptop will have the largest free space on the screen – 13.3 inches diagonally when folded. The HP model only has an 11-inch display, while the foldable Asus ZenBook has a 12.6-inch display. Another impressive foldable ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 with a 16.3-inch OLED panel and a 12-inch diagonal when closed.

Samsung Display is the world’s largest manufacturer of OLED displays. Approximately 8.5 million panels are planned to be produced in 2023. Projections for 2023 exceed this year’s target by approximately 2.5 million units. Currently, there are no specific details regarding the device’s release.
