Apple to pay million compensation to affected MacBook owners

Apple has agreed to pay $50 million to settle a class action lawsuit involving faulty butterfly keyboards used in MacBooks from 2015 to 2019. Agreement emails are now sent to eligible MacBook Pro owners who may be eligible for payment.

MacBook Pro owners with faulty butterfly keyboards will now receive emails regarding a $50 million settlement reached in a class action lawsuit against Apple. Dating back to 2018, the lawsuit was filed by a group of customers who claimed that Apple fixed a flaw in the butterfly keyboards on their MacBooks to continue selling the machines. Butterfly keyboards used on MacBooks from 2015 to 2019 were notorious for issues like key duplications, stuck keys, and complete keyboard malfunctions.

In June 2018, Apple launched a keyboard repair program for MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models, covering four years from date of purchase. But the program only replaced the butterfly keyboards with another butterfly keyboard and did not fix the underlying issue. In response to the lawsuit, Apple agreed to pay $50 million to settle the case and offer compensation to affected customers.

MacBook Pro owners whose top cases have been replaced by Apple at least twice within four years of purchase are considered Group 1 members of the deal and will receive a direct debit and a payment email. Group 2 residential class members who change a top vault will need to submit a claim form to receive compensation.

Group 3 participants who have changed the Compromise Keycap can also apply for a small placement. Cash rewards will depend on the number of repairs required and will be available for up to $395 for those who exchange two or more top cases. The letter says:

“Dear MacBook owner! You received this email because you previously contacted our firm regarding your MacBook laptop. On November 28, 2022, the court pre-approved a nationwide $50 million settlement that will benefit MacBook buyers who have repaired their Butterfly keyboards. You can find more information about placement, eligibility, approval process and your options at:

Claims will be accepted by March 6, 2023, and a final confirmation hearing will take place on March 16, 2023.
