What happened?
Musk tweeted on Saturday that the bots are in for a surprise soon. After that, Twitter virtually cut off access to hundreds of thousands of accounts, blocking traffic from around 30 mobile operators worldwide.
The social network has stopped sending authentication codes in the Asia-Pacific region, primarily in Indonesia, India and large areas of Malaysia.
The project was part of Elon Musk’s attempt to rid Twitter of spam. But instead of trying to eliminate criminals one by one, the company has identified mobile networks in certain countries connected to major spam networks and blocked users who trust those networks. Therefore, users could not receive SMS messages for two-factor authentication.
After users started complaining about the issue, Twitter quickly unblocked carriers, telling them the outage was due to “routing configuration changes.”
Ukraine suffered more
Authentication issues also affected Ukrainian users. The problem still exists. It is hoped that it will be resolved in the near future.
