The American Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released a landmark photo taken by the InSight lander on the surface of the Red Planet. The photo was posted by the NASA team on the project’s official Twitter page on Monday, December 19, 2022. The accompanying text is:
I’m running out of energy so this might be the last picture I can post. Don’t worry about me though: I had a productive and carefree time here. If I can keep talking to my team, I’ll post and post back here soon. Thank you for staying with me.”
The NASA team also noted in a blog post on its website that InSight did not respond to the December 18 message from Earth. The lander is believed to have come to the end of its mission to Mars. InSight last communicated with the spacecraft on December 15, 2022.
InSight’s solar panels have been dwindling over the past few months as they become increasingly covered in Martian dust. In November, NASA announced that the probe had only a few weeks of “life” left. Source
