More than 10 million votes, or 57.5 percent, were in favor of Musk’s resignation, according to results released Monday morning. Musk promised to stick with the results when he launched the poll, but almost a day later he tweeted more than 10 times without directly reporting the results. Musk simply responded to a tweet suggesting that the poll may have been manipulated by bots: “interesting.”
Announcing the new policy move in one of his first tweets since the survey, Musk said that Twitter will limit voting on important policy decisions to paid Twitter Blue subscribers.
Responding to a Blue member named Unfiltered Boss, Musk agreed with the suggestion that subscribers-only should have a say in future policy and said, “Twitter will make those changes.” As of November 15, Twitter Blue has reached nearly 140,000 followers. New York Times.
The billionaire had previously promised to put all future policy decisions to a vote, and invited Twitter users to choose leadership, asking them if he would leave the best job at the company he bought for $44 billion in October.
Musk’s dramatic offer came shortly after his appearance in the final game of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and sparked a wave of trending topics like “VOTE” and “Twitter CEO”. He did not identify an alternative leader and went so far as to say that someone who can do the job would not want to do it.
Musk warned that Twitter was at risk of going bankrupt and set off a “challenging” work environment for remaining employees after a drastic downsizing. In less than two months in his inauguration, he has frightened advertisers, ousted Twitter’s hottest creators, and transformed the service from a presentation of the day’s news into a headline.
After losing in the initial poll, Musk, who is also CEO of Tesla Inc., retweeted promotional materials for the auto company and Twitter service Blue for Business. He also responded to an article about criticism from rival Toyota Motor Corp. A simple “Wow” for electric cars.
Shares of Tesla, by far Musk’s most valuable conglomerate, fell after Twitter’s acquisition, as critics claimed he spent too much time on the social network. Shares fell 5.1% at 11:42 p.m. in New York.
