Like every other month, Microsoft highlighted all the new features added to Excel last month. Range has a few notable additions available in the web, Windows, and macOS versions of the app.
The biggest new addition is that Microsoft started testing with Office Insiders in August. This is a new IMAGE feature that lets you insert an image directly into a cell from its original location. This feature also adds alternative text to the image so it can be read by users with visual impairments and makes it easier to work with images in an Excel sheet. IMAGE; The web is available on Windows and Mac. Office Insiders can also try this feature on Android, but it’s not yet available to everyone.
In addition, Excel for the web has also received some significant improvements. These include new formula suggestions that analyze the data in your cells and suggest formulas you can use in a particular cell. For example, a cell in a row called “total” after a series of numbers automatically prompts you to use the SUM function.
Additionally, Excel can suggest formulas based on examples from previous cells. If there is a pattern in the data you pasted in, Excel can suggest a formula to fill the remaining cells in a given range. You can see it in action below to understand how it works.
Other new additions include new suggestions for fixing broken links to cloud workbooks you may have linked to. Also, the query bar now has a search bar to make it easier for you to find queries.
When upgrading to the Windows version of Excel, many of the new additions are available only to insiders. The only change available to everyone, except for the IMAGE function, is a new keyboard shortcut (Alt + F12 or Option + F12 on the Mac) to open the Power Query editor.
Starting with the ability to create nested Power Query data types, which means you can have data types as sublayers of other data types, Insiders have some notable additions. Additionally, Power Query’s Get Data functionality can now retrieve data from cells using dynamic arrays. These changes are currently available or rolling out for most production users.
