The number of cyberattacks tripled during the war

During the war, the number of enemy cyberattacks tripled compared to last year. The most under attack are government officials, media resources, the energy sector and the logistics sector. In cyberspace, the Russians are pursuing the same goals as their armies – to do as much damage to infrastructure as possible, not military rather than civilian. This was announced by the head of the State Special Service, Yuri Shchigol, at a briefing today.

Cybersecurity agencies also record numerous hostile cyberattack attempts against Ukrainians: spam, attempts to gather information about citizens. For this reason, we should always be vigilant and remember that every citizen is the entry point to our state’s information systems.

That is why the State Special Communications Service further emphasizes the need to adhere to simple cyber hygiene rules. Use dual authentication wherever possible, set strong passwords, change them regularly, no longer open the extraordinary number of suspicious messages and links.

In general, Ukraine today successfully repels cyber attacks carried out by Russia and groups associated with Russia’s military and law enforcement agencies. This is the result of both regulatory changes and the merging of cybersecurity agencies. And most importantly – a strong public-private partnership.

Also, the enemy now spends most of their resources on their own defense. As it turns out, their systems also have security vulnerabilities. Thanks to the global cyber community, we’ve seen that the Russians are far from perfect when it comes to cybersecurity.

Yuriy Shchyhol recalled that the Bug Bounty procedure (research by independent security experts of state information sources) is already regulated at the legislative level in Ukraine. The next step is other important changes in cyber legislation that will be adopted in the near future and strengthen the country’s cyber resilience.
