NASA, the American Aeronautics and Space Administration, talked about its winter research on the Red Planet. Cube-shaped snowflakes, icy landscapes and frost are all part of the coldest season on Mars, as noted in the press service. NASA poetically emphasized:

When winter arrives on Mars, the surface transforms into a truly otherworldly celebration.

It is coldest at the poles of the planet, where the temperature drops to -123 degrees Celsius. However, no region on Mars receives more than a few meters of snow. The elliptical orbit means that it takes more months for winter to begin: one Martian year equals about two Earth years.

During research with the help of robots, scientists were able to find out that there are two types of Martian snow: water ice and carbon dioxide or dry ice. Sylvain Piquet, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, said:

There are enough waterfalls for snowshoeing. But if you want to ski, you need to go to a crater or cliff where snow can accumulate on the slope.

It was also found that snow only occurs on the coldest edges of Mars: at the poles, under cloud cover, and at night. Also on Mars there are not six-ray snowflakes, but “cubic” snowflakes, due to the peculiarities of binding carbon dioxide molecules in dry ice during freezing. Source
