The European Union, on the initiative of the Irish Data Protection Commission, has launched an investigation into Twitter in the event of a possible leak of “several datasets containing users’ personal information”. This was reported by Bloomberg.
“These datasets reportedly contain personal information about approximately 5.4 million Twitter users worldwide”– The commission’s statement says.
According to the European regulator, the leaked databases could contain usernames, as well as emails and phone numbers attached to them.
Bloomberg writes that the alleged leak occurred before Elon Musk took over the Twitter lead, but that this would not absolve the billionaire from liability if information about the settlement was confirmed. If the EU government finds evidence of the leak, Twitter could be fined up to 4% of its annual turnover.
Twitter did not respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment on the investigation. In response, the Irish Data Protection Commission assured reporters that social network representatives had interacted with the organization and had already answered a number of questions.
