LG introduced a camera module with optical zoom

As camera technology has evolved, we’ve seen some incredible smartphones with great cameras. To achieve this, manufacturers are finding new ways to push the boundaries of what is possible. In recent years, we’ve seen phones come equipped with telephoto lenses and periscope lenses that can offer an astonishing 100x magnification. LG Innotek now offers a preview of its upcoming optical telephoto zoom camera module, which will be fully unveiled at CES 2023.

This camera module is important for several reasons, but perhaps the main reason is that it will be introduced in 2023 on smartphones equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The camera module will provide high quality images without any degradation. To do this, the company relies on a “zoom driver” that can quickly establish focus. Additionally, optical image stabilization will also play a role, minimizing blur whenever possible.

The company advertises that its module is “unique” and offers a zoom range of four to nine times. LG says one of the main advantages of this module is that users can freely choose the specific magnification they want to apply, from four to nine times. Of course, you get all this tech in a compact size, giving smartphones more room for other components. LG also claims that this should also “eliminate” the camera bump that often accompanies having a zoom or periscope lens.

While this technology is good, it needs optimisation, and LG says it’s working with Qualcomm to translate the software. As mentioned earlier, this technology will appear on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 smartphones, which will be released this year, but it is currently unknown which companies will use the new technology. For the most part, we expect to hear more about this and other technologies in the coming weeks as we approach CES 2023.
