Microsoft has announced that it’s making Excel’s autocomplete “smarter”, at least in the web version. If you type an equal sign in a cell, Excel for the web tries to suggest what kind of formula you should use based on the data around it.
For example, if you have a complete list of quarterly sales figures and a column labeled “Total” at the end, Excel might suggest summing a range of cells. According to a Microsoft blog post, this feature currently only works in English and offers formulas for sum, average, count, count, minimum and maximum.
There is also a “Formula by Examples” that allows you to automatically identify patterns in the data and fill in the rest of the column. Yes, something like this already existed, but Microsoft has improved this functionality.
Microsoft’s blog post also includes other announcements for Windows, Mac, and the web version of the app.
