Project a silent supersonic aircraft NASA X-59 A new phase has been passed: a new engine has been fitted to the machine, which is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing the noise effect that occurs when the aircraft reaches supersonic speed.
The General Electric F414-GE-100 engine is installed at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works in Palmdale, California. Its length is almost 4 m. The engine can generate a thrust of 10 tons and will allow the X-59 to accelerate to Mach 1.4 at a maximum flight altitude of 16.5 km.
“The engine installation is the result of years of development and planning by the teams at NASA, Lockheed Martin, and General Electric Aviation. I am impressed and proud of this unified team that has spent the last few months developing the basic procedures that ensure a smooth installation. “, said Ray Castner, curator of the project from NASA.
first flight NASA X-59 should be realized in 2023 with a new power plant. If all goes as planned, tests of the “silent-engine” aircraft over residential areas will begin in 2025. NASA X-59 itself will never go into production, but the results obtained during its tests will form the basis of promising supersonic cruise ships – quieter than Concordes. Source
