As promised, the NVIDIA company held an official event at CES 2023, where it announced a new desktop graphics card and five graphics cards for laptops at once. It is worth starting with mobile versions of graphics accelerators – we are talking about the models RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 and RTX 4050. NVIDIA employees confidently noted that these laptop chips provide the best performance-cost ratio. in all segments of video cards, only for gamers and enthusiasts – not a word was said about workstations.

The flagship NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with 16 GB of internal video memory was at the forefront of mobile graphics processors, but I want to emphasize a very important point. The fact is that video cards for laptops, although they have the same naming scheme as their desktop variants, are fundamentally different in their characteristics – the RTX 4090 for PCs and the RTX 4090 for laptops are completely different things, so it would be wrong to compare them. However, this is logical, because it is unrealistic to install a video card that consumes 400 W of power in a laptop, so chips for mobile platforms are greatly reduced.

Accordingly, the mobile RTX 4090 comes with NVIDIA AD103 graphics cores (76 SM cores and 9728 CUDA cores) – they have the same specifications as the desktop RTX 4080, only the mobile version is limited to 150 W (with the possibility of “overclocking)” to 175 W) with a slightly lower frequency.The flagship video card is immediately followed by the mobile RTX 4080 for high-performance laptops – 12 GB of internal video memory, it has only 58 SM cores and 7424 CUDA cores.This video card received the NVIDIA AD104 graphics core; it is also installed on the Tix4 and limits the TGP to 150 W with the possibility of “boosting” up to 175 W.

NVIDIA said that the first laptops with these graphics cards will be released on February 8, their prices will start at $ 1,999, and the performance increase will be 3 times (at 4K) compared to the previous generation graphics cards.

More affordable video cards are the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 models, which, as the “green team” representatives call it, were created specifically for the mass laptop market. Both video cards received 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory, and the main difference between the models is the clock frequency of the graphics processor and the TGP parameter. For example, both graphics cards will ship with a maximum power consumption of 115 W, but with the dynamic boost function this can be increased by 25 W to 140 W. At the same time, the younger model will have a reduced energy consumption of only 85 W, which will simplify the cooling system or extend battery life at peak loads.

Rounding out the list of graphics cards for laptops is the RTX 4050 model with 6 GB of internal video memory – the company said that this is a novelty for entry-level mobile gaming systems. This video card also received a configuration with TGP 115 W (with boost up to 140 W), has an energy-saving mode and a relatively high clock frequency of the 2370 MHz graphics processor.

For a laptop in the base configuration, the RTX 4070, RTX 4060, and RTX 4050 will go on sale starting February 22 for $999 – NVIDIA said these solutions will be enough to play at 1440p at a frame rate of 80 FPS and above, but in which games there is such a thing. No one tells you whether the performance is present or not.

And of course, the manufacturer has also officially introduced the RTX 4070 Ti, which is actually the previously canceled RTX 4080 12 GB. As the insider previously reported, the specs are exactly the same, but the company promises to sell the model for $799 – the 12GB RTX 4080 was originally supposed to sell for $100. The only problem is that the RTX 4070 Ti is already on sale in some countries, but its price is already over $1000 – demand is too high to sell the new product at the recommended price. But if the price tag still drops to $800, the RTX 4070 Ti can be called an excellent choice for the money, considering DLSS 3 support.
