Bing is a good search engine. I’m talking about functionality and performance, and of course I’m not saying it’s perfect, but overall Microsoft has done a good job, but it doesn’t threaten Google’s dominance in this market. They’ve tried everything from integrating with some Windows features to offering rewards for continued use. It’s all about trying to get a piece, albeit not a particularly large one, of a cake that currently only has one owner.

In this sense, it is more than conceivable that the thinking heads of Redmond should spend a lot of time thinking about what steps to take to achieve this goal, once it is verified that replicating the same functions, or even trying to improve them, is not enough. The vast majority of users have already accepted that when they want to find something on the Internet, they have to turn to Google, so more creative and interesting measures must be taken to grow Bing’s market share.

On the other hand, if there is an online service that has been growing exponentially in popularity in recent weeks, it is undoubtedly ChatGPT. So much so that despite its shortcomings, I personally believe that this is the most outstanding application of 2022, and although it seems too early to make a statement of this caliber, I am increasingly reading comments that say that this AI can achieve to become a great alternative to online search engines, i.e. Google, Bing, etc.

When I was little, I didn’t quite understand the meaning of the very common phrase: “If you can’t beat your enemy, join him”, but I think it can be perfectly explained by knowing, as we can read in The Information, that Microsoft and OpenAI are working together to integrate ChatGPT into Bing, according to sources cited by the mentioned media. It’s not yet clear how such an integration would work, and there are certainly pros and cons to consider, but the idea itself is quite promising.

One of the problems with ChatGPT is that it is data file it is not updated and the bot does not have internet access while collecting information. This explains to us that, for example, even today when we ask about Windows 11, it tells us that there is no such operating system and that Windows 10 is the latest version so far.

If ChatGPT could build on Bing search results and provide comprehensive answers to user queries precisely based on them, we could really be talking about the future of search engines. Of course, this poses serious problems, such as constantly monitoring resources to avoid bias, which is unfortunately so common in many AIs. If Microsoft and OpenAI manage to solve this problem, and if Google doesn’t quickly respond with another similar proposal, we may see Bing take a long lead for the first time ever, at least in terms of its proposal.
