Sony and the PlayStation division presented an unusual controller for PlayStation 5 at CES 2023, codenamed Project Leonardo. According to the PlayStation blog, the Project Leonardo controller is designed to “remove obstacles and help disabled gamers play on PlayStation 5 more easily, comfortably and for longer.”
Sony said the new controller was developed with input from experts, community members and game developers. Project Leonardo includes a number of interchangeable components, including many analog covers for joysticks and buttons of various shapes and sizes.
On PS5, gamers will be able to customize their gameplay with button mapping, where the controller’s buttons can be mapped to any supported controller functionality. And players can assign two functions to the same button. The PS5 will also include up to three control profiles, where gamers can save their favorite settings and easily switch between them.
Project Leonardo can be used alone or with an optional Project Leonardo or DualSense controller. It’s also compatible with third-party devices via four 3.5mm ports. PlayStation said Project Leonardo is still in active development and the company continues to receive valuable feedback from the community.
