This is not the first time we are talking about the Nintendo Switch 2, although it is true that this console was known by other names that you will surely remember, and one of the most popular was undoubtedly the Nintendo Switch Pro. This brings us directly to the consideration of the Nintendo Switch 2, a project that is gaining momentum and which analysts say could arrive in 2024. This prediction makes sense, since the original model already “completed its life cycle”, and it has hardware that is outdated by today’s standards, but what could that console be? Let’s take a look at it.

At the design level, it is most likely a Japanese company keeping the hybrid approach we saw on the Nintendo Switch, though it should introduce changes to improve the user experience in both portable and desktop mode. There is also the possibility that Nintendo will decide to make deeper changes and try to create a new revolution, although this would mean more risk, and I think that this time it is more likely that the Japanese company will bet on a more conservative strategy.

The most important changes that the Nintendo Switch 2 will bring will be present at the hardware level, and that is that, according to the latest and most reliable leaks, everything indicates that the said console will use its own NVIDIA Tegra SoC, which will be based on the Tegra T234, chip, which comes from the Tegra T239 and which it has in its full version 12 core CPU arm aa Ampere GPU (architecture used in GeForce RTX 30) with 2048 shaders, 64 texture units, 32 raster units, 64 tensor cores and 16 RT cores.

The Nintendo Switch 2 could use a full version of the aforementioned SoC, or a stripped-down version to reduce costs and power consumption. Even in the worst case scenario, which would mean using a version with an 8-core CPU and GPU with only 1,024 active shaders, the jump over the Nintendo Switch would be enormous and that the new console would play with an advantage to offer DLSS 2 support and hardware accelerated ray tracing.

DLSS 2 support would be key for the Nintendo Switch 2 to be able to move 1080p games at high fps in portable mode and to offer 4K resolution in dock mode with a frame rate of at least 30 frames per second. We must not forget that DLSS 2 not only improves performance, but can also reduce GPU usage, which will lead to lower energy consumption and greater autonomytwo key values ​​for a portable console.

Nintendo has a unique opportunity to create the most advanced portable console today, although we have to remember that this new SoC would have to be accompanied by more unified memory and a jump to SSD storage. The most logical thing would be for the Nintendo Switch 2 to have at least 8GB of unified memory and a 64GB SSD, though it would be ideal to install at least 16 GB of unified memory and a 128 GB SSD.
