As reported, Sumy State University’s project “Developing a robotic platform for controlling small arms” was one of the winners of the Ministry of Education and Science’s annual competition. Developers will receive funding to further develop the device and then put it into mass production.

“A robotic platform to control light weapons will allow soldiers to stay away from combat operations,” says Ivan Degtyarev, senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Sumy State University.

As Degtyarev explains, you can aim, aim, and fire with the help of the remote control.

“We can adjust the angle necessary to change the angle of fire to the enemy positions. And indeed, the vertical axis for the possibility of repeating the topography of the terrain, so that our view remains parallel to the horizon in all cases,” says Degtyarev.

This is a low-cost prototype so far. Various departments of the university worked on the invention, design engineers were responsible for the mechanical part.

“The basis of this platform is mainly standard parts, gearboxes are purchased, motors, and indeed the structural material is profiled pipes and sheets, which are cut using laser cutting and also hand-welded using electric welding,” he says. Degtyarev.

The platform will be installed on a quad bike, which will deliver it to the required point. You can equip it with various small arms, the holder on the platform can be changed according to need. The robot can work both stationary and in motion.

Automation and programming experts worked on the control of the robot. The participant of the project, Denys Stryzhenok, a student of the KSU department, says that he had the opportunity to apply the knowledge he gained in classes. He says the basis of the robotic platform is an earlier invention:

“We developed a system for remote control of the German FG-42 machine gun. It was a frame on which the motors and electric trigger were fixed. There was also a 20-meter wire operator control. shoot from the shelter and see the image on the screen through the thermal sight attached directly to the machine gun”.

Petro Leontiev, head of the computer control systems department at Sumy State University, says that since the beginning of the war, small orders of automation from the army have been fulfilled. After examining the demand of wartime, they decided to create a mobile unmanned robot capable of performing military missions.

As reported, the scientists will receive funding from the Ministry of Education to improve the platform and make an exemplary model, as their project is one of the winners of the annual competition of scientific projects and developments of young scientists for 2023.
