NASA’s Curiosity rover found a water-rich opal stone in Gale Crater on the Red Planet.

This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to Space.com.

As the publication writes, the crater is located at the equator, which, unlike the poles, does not have much water ice on Mars.

The rover passed the data to researchers who analyzed it. Apparently there were fallen people in the pictures. Because they are composed mainly of water and silica, this may indicate that water once existed in Gale.

It is stated that these rocks could possibly be used to obtain water in future missions to Mars.

According to University of Arizona physicist Travis Gabriel, fissures on the surface of Mars, where the opal is found, were among the last places on the fourth planet to have abundant liquid water.

Similar stones are formed on the earth, in geysers and hot springs, as well as at the bottom of oceans and other bodies of water.

Curiosity is a car-sized robotic rover that explores Mars and is part of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory program. Launched from Cape Canaveral on 26 November 2011.
