According to recent reports, Apple is planning to switch the Apple Watch from OLED to a new proprietary Micro-LED display. While the move has been the subject of widespread speculation, an image industry analyst recently confirmed that the move did indeed occur. Details are here…
Apple’s move to a Micro LED display for the Apple Watch is a hotly debated topic in the tech industry. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple plans to use Micro LED displays in the Apple Watch from 2024 or 2025, with parts developed in-house rather than third-party companies like Samsung or LG Display.
We published in our November Investment Spending Report that LGD is building a small lineup of microLED back panels for the Apple Watch. It will not start production until 2H’24. It’s this little line that Apple is likely to assemble microLEDs for for its launch in the 25th. Apple doesn’t do the whole transaction.

However, a new report from display industry analyst Ross Yang adds more context to the story by saying that LG Display will begin production of Micro-LED parts in the second half of 2024, leaving plenty of time for Apple to produce panels. The move to micro-LED technology could contribute to improved color reproduction, better contrast, and even brighter Apple Watch displays.
While it’s not yet clear which Apple Watch models will make the first move, the high-end Apple Watch Ultra seems like a logical choice considering the target audience and price. The increased brightness can also be an advantage for customers who use the watch outdoors. It’s worth noting that Apple isn’t the only company considering Micro-LED technology for wearables, as a recent report suggests that Samsung is also exploring the technology for its own wearables.
The transition to micro LED technology is important, and it takes the help of companies like LG Display to make it happen. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how and when these tech giants apply Micro-LED to their product line.
