The United States Patent and Trademark Office (UPSTO) has released an app from Apple on its website that describes a special coating to protect the screens of foldable devices. Thanks to this coating, cracks and folds should not be seen on the screen of a foldable smartphone or tablet.
Apple’s patent describes the special nature of the flexible screen’s protective layer: usually, damage to such screens begins with microcracks in the fold, and the patented coating can fill such cracks and make it difficult for new cracks to form.
The protective coating is located on the touch panel and consists of several layers: a transparent substrate with a thickness of less than 150 microns and a hard coating with a thickness of 1 to 200 microns. A hard coating can be designed to have high tensile strength and withstand high stress before failing.
Thus, the coating will be strong enough to provide high chip and scratch resistance. It will also be resistant to stains and dirt. We remind you that for some time on the Internet there have been rumors that not only a foldable iPhone, but also an iPad and a MacBook with a flexible display have appeared.
