The American company SpaceX on Wednesday launched a new satellite of the global positioning system of the US Air Force’s third generation GPS III into orbit.

The launch of the Falcon 9 rocket took place from the 40th launch complex at the US Space Force base in Cape Canaveral (Florida).

After launch, the first reusable stage of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle landed on the A Shortfall of Gravitas automatic floating platform in the Atlantic.

The company states that this is the fifth SpaceX GPS III mission.

The 3.8-tonne spacecraft will be part of a planned orbital group of 32 third-generation global positioning satellites. These devices will gradually replace the legacy satellites that currently provide worldwide GPS signals.

The first satellite of the GPS III family was launched into orbit in 2018. Lockheed Martin Corporation is engaged in the production of new satellites.

The cost of a satellite is 577 million dollars, the service life of the next generation satellite is 15 years.

The first 10 GPS III devices in the Spacecraft version (Block IIIA) will be launched, including 2023, while the other 22 devices in the Follow On version (Block IIIF) will begin orbiting from 2025 to 2034.

In addition, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX announced that 51 Starlink internet satellites were launched into space on Thursday, January 19th. The Falcon 9 rocket will launch them into low Earth orbit.

The launch will take place from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
