Astronomers have compiled a catalog of more than 3 billion objects in the Milky Way.
A group of scientists has gathered data on more than 3.32 billion objects in the Milky Way galaxy using an astronomical survey of the visible and near-infrared spectrum of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory’s Dark Energy Camera in Chile.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Space.com.

“Imagine a group photo of over three billion people and each individual is recognizable. “Astronomers will take a close look at this detailed portrait of more than three billion stars in the Milky Way,” said Debra Fisher, Director of the US National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences.

Researchers used the Dark Energy Camera to observe the plane of the Milky Way in the optical and near-infrared bands, revealing this region of our galaxy in unprecedented detail.

The catalog is said to have taken two years to build, with the Dark Energy Camera generating more than 10 terabytes of data from 21,400 individual images of the southern sky.

“(Research – ed.) One of the main reasons for the success of DECaPS2 is that we pinpoint a region of extremely high stellar density and we are careful when detecting sources that appear almost overlapping.” Harvard researcher Andrew Saijari of the Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

As reported by Ukrinform, a group of Chinese and Australian researchers have measured the mass of the Milky Way galaxy and concluded that it is about 550 billion times greater than the mass of the Sun.
