The Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the Wikipedia project, announced the launch of a revamped interface aimed at making the site more accessible and easier to use. Users should experience minor but significant changes to the interface and familiar functions.

What will change?

The platform has received a number of changes, including:

  • improved search,
  • a more visible tool to switch between languages,
  • updated header with access to frequently used links,
  • Updated table of contents for Wikipedia articles
  • and other design changes for a better reading experience.

In recent weeks, the interface has been made available in hundreds of language versions of Wikipedia. The changes being implemented are not very significant – some users may not even notice them right away.

The organization says the update is necessary to meet the needs of the next generation of Internet users, including those who are new to the network and those who may be less familiar with the Internet.

Working on a new design

To develop the new interface, the foundation involved more than 30 different groups of volunteers from around the world, including users from India, Indonesia, Ghana and Argentina, who helped test the update and shared their thoughts on the development of the product. The purpose of the update was to make Wikipedia a more modern web platform, remove clutter and make it easier for users to contribute. In addition, the update aimed to make the desktop version of Wikipedia more compatible with the mobile version of Wikipedia.
