Apple’s AirTag rescued a dog swept away by floodwaters in California this week and took rescuers to its location. As he reported ABC7One-year-old Australian shepherd Seamus was caught in a running sewer after escaping from his owner while hiking. Seamus was dragged into the flood control tank and quickly swam away from his owner, but eventually managed to get out of the access pipe. Because Seamus had an AirTag on his collar, rescuers were able to locate his owners, and their owners were able to track his whereabouts.

The drainage net carried Seamus about a mile from where he started and sank into the bottom of an accessible pipe. The San Bernardino County Fire Department said on its Facebook page that both the Apple AirTag and a regular ID tag “help rescuers and owners find and reunite the puppy.”

Apple has created AirTags to track objects, and the company does not recommend using them to track pets, children, or other creatures as it requires an iPhone nearby and doesn’t have its own built-in GPS tracking. That hasn’t stopped many pet owners from using “AirTags” on their pets, and there is a wide variety of collars, harnesses, and other accessories to equip pets with AirTags.
