OUR NASA and Boeing are working on an interesting project: with millions of investments from both sides, they create Sustained Flight Demonstrator (Sustained flight demonstrator / SFD). Investments will be made within seven years and during the period will have $425 million from NASA and $725 million from Boeing. The goal of aviation research is to create more fuel efficient commercial aircraft that benefit the environment, industry and passengers.

Bill Nelson, the head of the US space agency, commented: “If we are successful, perhaps we will see these technologies in aircraft (…) in the 2030s.“.

“If we are successful, perhaps we will see these technologies in aircraft (…) in the 2030s,” says Bill Nelson, head of NASA.

The agreement assumes that persons involved in both Boeing how many in NASA, will test and fly a full-scale narrow-body aircraft. Thus, they will be one step closer to a future aimed at reducing fuel consumption.

NASA and Boeing project will be important to reduce emissions

Another aspect worth mentioning is that, according to NASA, emissions will be decreased in up to 30%, compared to today’s most efficient single-aisle aircraft. For those unfamiliar with the segment, these models are the most common in airline fleets and represent almost 50% emissions world aviation.

Emissions will be reduced by 30% compared to today’s most efficient single-aisle aircraft.

By the end of this decade professionals expect to take advantage of relevant developments in this area, which is fundamental to a future that strives for efficiency and sustainability.
