ChatGPT is trendy, very trendy. Articles, videos, analysis… in the last few weeks, thousands and thousands of content have been published dedicated to the chatbot created by OpenAI, which has amazed half the world. We, as you may recall, decided to test it to find its weak points and also set our sights on its darker side while telling you about Microsoft’s interest in the service and how there are people trying to benefit from applications from accessing them.

Personally, and I’ve commented on this on more than one occasion, I find ChatGPT to be a truly innovative proposition, because until now we’ve never seen an AI capable of offering this level of purely text-based interaction with human beings . Many of his answers are correct and, just as importantly, he knows how to adapt their format and level to the interviewee, becoming a universal interviewee.

However, I read on ZDNet that Yann LeCun, an institution in the AI world and head of AI at Meta, states that ChatGPT is not “particularly innovative» nor “nothing revolutionary”«. In this article we can read the following:

« “In terms of the underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not particularly innovative,” Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief artificial intelligence scientist, told a small press and executive meeting on Zoom last week.

“It’s not groundbreaking, even if the public perceives it that way,” LeCun said. “It’s just, you know, it’s well put together, it’s very well done” «.

I think it’s important to remember that LeCun was awarded the 2019 Turing Award along with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengie, so we’re talking about the most relevant person in the field, with a level of knowledge on the matter far beyond that of the vast majority of mortals, and therefore an opinion that’s important to listen to. discussed your argument about the technology on which ChatGPT is based because I am absolutely convinced that you are correct.

The technical aspects.

Now only the technology used determines whether something is innovative or not? All developments are based on previously developed technologiesso if we start from that assumption, nothing is truly innovative because everything is part of a chain of already existing technologies, right?

ChatGPT is innovative because it allows the previously unseen use of these technologies, which, although already veterans, have not been used to create a universal chatbot with a universal approach, able to adapt its responses to its partner. And even if the infrastructure it runs on is based on steam engines, it would still be an innovative proposition.

Google’s need to provide a quick response, Microsoft’s interest in integrating it into its products and services, the interest generated by future payment accounts, the level of saturation of its servers… there are many elements that indicate that yes, ChatGPT is indeed an innovative proposition, and many. That the technology it’s based on already existed decades ago? Well, the fact that it could be done, but no one has done it so far, says more than pointing a finger.
