Microsoft confirmed on Monday (23) a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAi, the platform responsible for ChatGPT and Dall-E. While the exact amount has not been disclosed, close sources say the investment will exceed US$10 billion over the next few years.

OpenAI said in an official statement that Microsoft’s investment will strengthen the company and allow it to “continue our independent research and development of ever safer, more useful, and more powerful AI.”

This is not the first time Microsoft has invested in OpenAI, in 2019 the company has already invested $1 billion to build cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

Advanced AI development

Microsoft President and CEO Satya Nadella says the company is committed to democratizing AI as a new technology platform. “In the next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across all industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolset with Azure to build and run their applications.”

The partnership between the companies is focused on three areas:

• Supercomputer Scaling – Microsoft will increase investment in the development and deployment of specialized supercomputing systems to accelerate innovative independent AI research into OpenAI. The company, in turn, will use the Azure artificial intelligence infrastructure to help customers and deploy artificial intelligence applications on a global scale.
• New opportunities based on AI. Microsoft will deploy OpenAI models in consumer and enterprise products, as well as introduce new categories of digital experiences based on OpenAI technology.
• Exclusive cloud service provider. As the exclusive provider of OpenAI cloud services, Azure will support all OpenAI workloads across research, products, and API services.

Through the partnership, services such as ChatGPT and Dall-E should take advantage of Azure to expand and accelerate their development. Despite the announcement of massive layoffs, Microsoft is still considering making major investments in other sectors.
