Samsung and Nokia have signed a new cross-licensing patent agreement covering Nokia’s key breakthroughs in 5G and other technologies, after the previous agreement signed in 2016 expires at the end of 2022.

The terms of the deal are kept confidential, but will see Samsung pay royalties to Nokia for the use of technology developed by Nokia over a multi-year period starting January 1, 2023.

The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, years of investment in research and development, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”

But the two companies are no strangers to signing information sharing agreements, as they also signed a video standards agreement in 2021.

The Nokia 5G patent portfolio includes more than 4,500 patent families deemed essential for 5G, and some of the technologies include LTE-NR Dual Link that accelerates 5G deployment, 5G radio stack design that allows maximum reuse of 4G silicon, and energy-saving technologies. and advanced voice services.
