Last Friday (20) the New York Times reported for the first time that the founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin held several emergency meetings with company executives looking for solutions against ChatGPT OpenAI. Page and Brin will reportedly return to day-to-day work at Big Tech, pledging to invest in several AI projects.

CALM: Google creates artificial intelligence in response to ChatGPT

According to the New York Times, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a “code red” to spur the development of new AI. Google is expected to introduce about 20 new products, as well as showcase a ChatGPT-like version of its search engine, later this year. “This is a time of significant vulnerability for Google. ChatGPT hit the ground running, saying, “Here’s a compelling new search experience,” D. Sivakumar, former director of search at Google, told the New York Times.

CALM: first attempt at an answer from Google

Big Tech has already started outlining its first project that could be the answer to ChatGPT. Confident Adaptive Language Modeling (CALM) is being developed in collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

For now, CALM is available for internal use as Google says it doesn’t want to provide an unsatisfactory and insecure product. The company says it’s important that the chatbot gives accurate answers and doesn’t share conflicting opinions, which is why it hasn’t been shown publicly yet. We don’t know if CALM is just a prototype, or if AI is taking shape to become a real competitor to ChatGPT, but we can say that the presence of Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the halls of Google is a clear sign that the search giant is worried with the development of artificial intelligence created by OpenAI.
