The launch took place from NASA’s Wallops Air Force Base on Jan. 24 at 18:00 local time (1:00 p.m. Kyiv time, Jan 25), approximately 45 minutes after sunset.
The three satellites were deployed a little less than an hour after launch at a planned altitude of approximately 550 kilometers. It is designed to locate radio signal sources on the Earth’s surface.
The launch, called Virginia Is for Launch Lovers, was under construction for Rocket Lab, which has so far only launched Electron missions from its two facilities on New Zealand’s North Island.
Rocket Lab’s first launch from the US was the first of three planned missions for Virginia-based HawkEye 360. Under the deal, the company will launch a total of 15 HawkEye 360 satellites by 2024, with the January launch being the company’s fifth batch of satellites.
Rocket Lab currently plans to launch about one Electron mission per month from the Wallops site.
