On the occasion of the ‘Data Protection Day’, which is celebrated on January 28 every year, experts stressed that the definition of data has expanded with the development of digitization, and called for the indiscriminate use of personal data.
ISTANBUL (IGFA) – Commenting on the ‘Data Protection Day’, which has been celebrated on January 28 every year in Turkey since 2016, after Europe and America, lawyer Görkem Gökçe said that digitization, which is accelerating in all areas of life, is affecting both personal and business data told of new dangers.
Gökçe said: “Personal data is a treasure. It is valuable information that can be converted into money. We must handle data that leaves a digital trace with care. We are not allowed to spread our information on every platform that comes our way,” he said.
Gökçe gave information about data security and privacy in the technology age and emphasized that Data Protection Day is important to raise awareness about prioritizing data security.
Gökçe pointed out that individuals and companies must protect their data under all circumstances: “All information related to an individual is data. With the development of digitization, the definition of data is also expanding. Personal data is a treasure. It is valuable information that can be converted into money. Collecting the data and pooling it when meaningful results emerge makes this information very valuable. This is how companies can make a profit. The places we visit on social media, our likes, comments and every image we spend time with leave a trail. These are processed as data by algorithms. If we think in terms of advertising, this processed data becomes money.”
