Apple ends development of Wi-Fi chip

It’s no secret that Apple is working hard to be independent when it comes to the hardware of its devices. The company wants to gain control over certain components and reduce dependency on companies like Qualcomm or Broadcom. The company is working on 5G chips that will free itself from its ties to Qualcomm. According to reports, Apple was also working on a Wi-Fi chip expected to be released in 2024. However, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the development of such a chip has been discontinued. According to him, Apple will avoid it “for a while”.

With this news, Broadcom will continue to be Apple’s Wi-Fi chip supplier. The company probably had reasons, but that’s a major bullshit in the plans. We’ll remind you that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has signaled the launch of a new Wi-Fi + Bluetooth chip for the iPhone. Apple will begin migrating to these chips in 2024 and will replace Broadcom components completely by 2025. According to Kuo, the shutdown is about the previous chip with Wi-Fi technology. The combined Wi-Fi and BT chip is even more complex and there are no details about its development at this time.

Apple’s overall plan is to combine Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Cellular chips into a single solution. A 5G cellular modem to replace Qualcomm’s solution has been in development for years. But given the recent changes, we don’t know what will happen to this chip. Apple is also apparently working to replace the RF and wireless charging chips it bought from Qualcomm. As we said at the beginning of this article, the company is working hard to be independent.

According to the report, development of the Wi-Fi chip has been put on hold as Apple wants to focus its chip design resources on the 3nm chip for future iPhones. Kuo claims that “insufficient resources” are preventing mass production of Apple’s chips. He also claims that it will be risky for Apple to use Wi-Fi chips in the coming years. Standards are changing, and Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are new things. Therefore, Apple will wait to launch a product with Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 as standard.
