The SPATIUM M480 Play is a new SSD introduced by MSI. The Taiwanese manufacturer is focusing on expanding the storage capacity of the PS5, but it could actually be used on PCs as well as other units in this series.

This SSD uses the standard M.2 2280 format and connects to the PCIe Gen4 interface. Waiting for Gen5 to appear, it’s the one that offers the most performance, and the MSI promises sequential baud rates up to 7,000 / 6,800 MB per second in read / write modes.

SPATIUM M480 Play has a 3D NAND flash memory “high quality and high density”, the manufacturer promises, even if he does not reveal who is the supplier of the memory. It supports NVMe 1.4 and includes performance-enhancing technologies such as DRAM caching and SLC caching, whose capacity is unknown.

The unit has a aluminum heatsink which is designed to fit on the PlayStation 5, although, as we said, it could be used on a PC for games or content creators. You already know that these powerful units get quite hot and it is almost mandatory to mount some type of heatsink, whether it is the manufacturer of the SSD or the motherboard, which is also commonly part of the high-end.

The SSD from MSI will be distributed in storage capacities 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB to suit all needs. It supports a wide range of data error correction features, including LPDC ECC and E2E protection, which provide a high degree of terabyte write resistance that you will know as TBW.
