Microsoft has launched a mandatory Windows 11 22H2 distribution for systems running Windows 11 21H2 approaching the End of Support (EOS) date of October 10, 2023. Redmond regularly runs automatic feature updates to ensure these devices continue to be supported until their EOS date and provide them with the latest updates, security updates and enhancements.
The automatic rollout phase of feature updates began after Windows 11 22H2 (known as Windows 11 2022 Update) became available for general distribution to users with eligible devices today via Windows Update.
“Today, we’re starting to automatically update consumer and unmanaged business devices running Windows 11, version 21H2 Home and Pro to Windows 11, version 22H2,” Microsoft’s clipboard update says.
“Starting with Windows 10, we help Windows users stay up to date with the latest and safest versions of Windows with automatic updates. We’re taking the same approach in Windows 11 to help you stay safe and productive.”
Automatic updates will be rolled out gradually, starting with devices running Windows 11 21H2 for the longest time.
“If you are interested in upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2 immediately, open your Windows Update settings and select ‘Check for updates’. If your device is ready, you will see the ‘Download and Install’ option that Microsoft added today.
A compatibility hold may prevent updating on some devices
“For example, if we detect that your device may have a compatibility issue, we may take protective measures. In this case, the update will not be installed automatically until the issue is resolved.” Currently, the only compatibility snag preventing the Windows 11 2022 update is having certain versions of Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) drivers on 11th generation Intel Core processors causing blue screens of death (BSOD). affect systems.
However, Microsoft offers a workaround for those who want to install Windows 11 22H2 that requires them to check if Intel has an updated driver for their system. The issue can be resolved by updating the Intel SST drivers to version 10.30.00.5714 or later, or version 10.29.00.5714 or later. After updating the appropriate Intel driver, it may take up to 48 hours before you can install the Windows 11 2022 update on your system.
