According to the South China Morning Post, Taiwan’s largest electronics manufacturer Foxconn has stopped production at its two facilities in Kunshan County in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. Local media this morning confirmed that the shutdown was due to quarantine restrictions due to COVID-19. Production was halted after coronavirus infections were detected at the facilities. As a result, the dormitories where the workers lived were closed.
Foxconn is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and fulfills orders from Apple and many other companies. Foxconn’s main manufacturing facilities are located in mainland China.
Observers’ fears were confirmed: Three major factories that assemble Apple devices (Pegatron, Quanta and Compal) had previously been closed due to restrictions in Shanghai. The order was diverted to Foxconn production lines. But even then there were suggestions that the Foxconn facilities could be stopped.
