The latest effort in this regard comes in the form of Memory Saver, a new feature that disables open tabs you haven’t used in a while so that the tabs you use offer the most user-friendly experience. If you turn on Memory Saver, your inactive tabs stay open and are automatically reloaded when you open an inactive tab.

Google claims that the new Memory Saver feature means Chrome uses up to 40% and 10GB less memory. The company says the new performance setting is especially good for smooth running of active video tabs and games.

In the next few weeks, Google will roll out memory saving mode on Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, but not everyone will see it yet. Fortunately, if the new menu “Settings” -> “Performance If » is not displayed, you can enable it manually using the experimental features in Chrome Flags. The steps below show how to do this.

How to enable memory saving mode in Chrome?

Before proceeding, be sure to bookmark important tabs and save anything important you’re working on in Chrome, then update the browser to the latest version available (at the time of writing this is 109.0.5414.119).

1. Launch Chrome and paste the following into the address bar: chrome://flags/#high-efficiency-mode-available
2. Change the setting next to Turn On High Performance Mode in Settings to: default on “activated» and restart Chrome.
   
3. Now paste the following into the address bar: chrome://settings/performance
4. In the new Productivity menu, turn on the switch next to “.Memory is being saved».
   
5. Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.

Memory Saver runs in the background to free up memory for other tasks. You can control the mod at any time by clicking “.Settings” in the three-dot menu and selecting the Quick Code submenu. Here, you can also prevent Chrome from disabling certain sites by clicking the ” icon.To addNext to “Always keep these sites active”.

Google warns that there are several settings and actions that can prevent the tab from being disabled. These include active voice calls or video playback, screenshots, page notifications, active downloads, partially completed forms, and devices connected via USB or Bluetooth.

How to enable power saving mode in Chrome?

In addition to Memory Saver, Google also offers a power saving mode that forces Chrome to automatically limit battery consumption when the battery reaches 20 percent. It achieves this by reducing the speed of image capture and other background tasks so you can see a difference in game and video performance. Google recommends turning this feature on to extend your device’s battery life on long car or plane trips.

The mod can be turned on or off on the same “Productivity” page. settings. If you don’t see it and don’t want to wait for it to appear, follow the same steps as above but replace the address in step 1 with: chrome://flags/#battery-saver-mode -available and “activatedNext to “Enable power saving mode in settings” and then restart the browser.
