Clean windows from unnecessary or unwanted applications This is one of the first tasks that every user who buys a new computer with Microsoft preinstalled, and also one who upgrades or performs a clean installation of any version, must solve.

Neither Microsoft nor its hardware partners have realized how disgusted customers are bloatware on Windows. No matter how much you spend, your brand new computer will come full of “junk” software, unnecessary applications and services that penalize the user experience, unnecessarily take up storage or memory resources, reduce performance and stability, and in more serious cases (such as Superfish) seriously. endanger the safety of the equipment. Here we are lucky to be able to test the best (and most expensive) device and it is scary to analyze a laptop for 3000 euros in these conditions.

The problem is extendable to other systems such as Android and the number of applications pre-installed on smartphones. The problem goes beyond Bloatware, and both Microsoft and Google are taking the opportunity to promote their own applications to competitors. And there seems to be no solution, no matter how much we insist that it would be more convenient and considerate for customers if all this type of software was offered as an additional download for those who wanted / needed to install it.

Windows applications take up 1.6 GB of space

Microsoft has promised to solve the problem after criticism during the launch of Windows 10, but did not comply. There was only talk of the Workstation version, and it also removed the official “Fresh Start” tool, which at least made it easier to clean Windows by automating the process. I had a good chance with Windows 11, but the problem persists.

Clean Windows from Bloatware

A recent study used the PowerShell console to determine the actual space occupied by the default Windows applications in a standard installation of up to 1.6 GB of space. For most current computers, this may seem small, but it’s much more than previously thought, and the size you can see in the GUI.

To the thirty-long universal Microsoft applications (most useful on a desktop without touch screens), the company adds others that have nothing to do with the proper functioning of the operating system. Various OEMs install a large number of applications and services, the vast majority of which are (to put it mildly) underused, and together they create a system unnecessarily bloated except for its commercial problems and not the problems of users.

Windows cleaning: a mandatory task

It’s time to roll up your sleeves as one of the first tasks you need to do when you get your new computer or upgrade with an existing new version. In previous tutorials, we’ve offered you to clean Windows 10 from the same desktop, Settings, Control Panel, console, or third-party applications.

If you opt for this last option, we must highlight O&O AppBuster for its performance and constant updating, as it allows you to delete applications for the current user or for a group of users on your computer and also allows you to reinstall deleted applications in case you want any of then use them.

Today, we bring you another third-party tool that makes it easy to remove software and finally clean Windows. It’s about free and open source script compatible with all active versions of Windows. It does not require any type of installation, because it works by activating the corresponding commands in the advanced Powershell console, but through a graphical interface that simplifies the whole process. Very useful for system administrators and regular users, which works as follows:

  • Download this compressed .ZIP file from their GitHub site.
  • Unzip the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where you extracted the files and run the “Bloatware-Removal-Utility.bat” batch file in administrator mode.

  • The script starts a console session and displays a graphical user interface for manipulation.

The screen displays the installed applications with their name, version, and publisher. There is no possibility to open a program folder or the main executable file, which would be suitable for checking for duplicates, but its use is very simple in any case and consists only in identifying the application that we intend to uninstall.

The tool includes a “switch suggested bloatware” button that marks the application itself based on the previous list. It’s not very accurate and can remove utility software, so it is better to look at all the applications one by one. It also has an additional console show / hide button that works below the interface and is ultimately responsible for removing applications.

Let’s say that by default, it triggered the creation of a system restore point, which is done before the selected software is removed. That will allow undo the changes made if we accidentally deleted the application, although we could install any of them from the Windows Store.

Another alternative is this Bloatware Removal Tool to clean the operating system, which comes standard with a large amount of software and services that take up unnecessary resources. And if you prefer third-party software for this task, applications like the aforementioned O&O AppBuster perform their function very well.
