The aircraft handover ceremony was held at the Boeing factory in Washington state and was broadcast online. Factory workers, top executives of the aerospace industry, and Hollywood actor John Travolta attended the event.
“The Boeing 747 is a symbol of many things and above all, I think the 747 is a symbol of a world that has made it much smaller,” said Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr.
Operation of the Boeing 747 began in 1970. At the time of its creation it was the largest, heaviest and widest passenger aircraft. The Boeing 747 was also the “number one aircraft” used to carry the US president. It also carried American spacecraft of the Space Shuttle system to the launch complex.
However, in recent years, the use of the 747 model has become unprofitable for many airlines due to the high fuel consumption of the four-engine passenger aircraft.
There has also been a decline in passenger transport due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of December 2022, only 44 passenger versions of the 747 are in service, according to aviation analytics company Cirium.
