Following a preliminary agreement to prevent companies like Apple or Google from preferentially treating their own applications on their devices, the European Parliament has now begun to push for an agreement that could reveal some of Google’s best kept secrets: its algorithm.

This weekend, the European Union announced an agreement on a new set of laws collectively called “Digital Services Act” (or DSA for English) This, once approved, will lead to seeing some of the big technology companies such as Google, Microsoft or Meta forced to reveal how their algorithms work and also to change their approaches to targeted advertisingamong other changes.

And it is because the list of provisions of this new law covers various topics concerning some of the most controversial practices concerning the operation of “Big Tech” companies in Europe, while being able to highlight aspects that include:

  • forced transparency about how content algorithms like the Facebook news channel work.
  • The ability for users to appeal against content moderation decisions, such as deleting posts.
  • Unspecified “mechanisms” for large platforms such as Google to adapt during public safety or health crises
  • No more targeted ads based on sexuality, religion, or ethnicity, and no more ads targeted to minors.

However, the DSA has to go through a final vote before approval, which would postpone its implementation until 15 months after the last vote or at the beginning of 2024what happens later.

What is not clear, however, is the global impact that this law will have if it is finally passed, as planned. And that’s because even though it’s a law exclusively for European territory, it’s no wonder big companies like Google they ended up duplicating this new model for the company’s operations around the worldprovided time and effort in creating different sets of rules for each of the different regions in which it operates, such as those that already exist in some regions of the United States (such as SiriusXM Californians).
