AMD’s secret weapon to boost Ryzen 7000 sales will be cheap AM5 motherboards equipped with the A620 chipset. We already gave you some keys a few days ago and told you that this new series of motherboards will have two different configurations, one based on the Promontory 21 module and the other equipped with the Promontory 22 module. The latter would be exactly the most economical version.
Despite all the information that has been coming out recently, we had important doubts about some key features, among which undoubtedly the issue of RAM overclocking stood out. Thanks to a new leak, we managed to clear some of these doubts and know that the cheap AM5 motherboards with the A620 chipset will allow the use of AMD EXPO profiles.
This means we can overclock the RAM and that we will not be limited to DDR5 memory at 5200 MHzand that we will be able to reach AMD’s recommended level for using Ryzen 7000 processors, which is DDR5 at 6000 MHz. This is undoubtedly good news, because the speed of RAM affects the performance of these processors, and the difference can be significant in certain scenarios, as well as in games where we see ourselves at resolutions lower than 4K.
Those new motherboards won’t let us overclock, which means that we will not be able to adjust the working speed of the CPU. This is not really a major problem, because as I told you in our analysis of Ryzen 7000X processors, they already come with a very aggressive turbo mode that maximizes the operating frequencies, which together with their high operating temperatures (95 degrees) makes overclocking unnecessary.
A separate case would be the non-X Ryzen 7000, which works at lower frequencies, but even then the difference in performance is minimal and for this reason it would be easy to accept this small sacrifice in exchange for a 100 euro motherboard, Or maybe even a little less, since the price difference with the B650 motherboard would be around 100 euros.
Another important key that will not be present on A620 motherboards will be the PCIe Gen5 standard. these boards will limit us to the PCIe Gen4 standard, specifically to the 28 lines that the Ryzen 7000 CPU brings, and the chipset of the board will only be compatible with the PCIe Gen3 standard. Finally, too the number of USB 3.2 Gen2 connectors will be reduced available and we will not have support for CrossFire configurations.
In general, everything is within the limits of what could be expected, and I think that these new motherboards will play a key role in the launch of Ryzen 7000 sales. Unfortunately we don’t have an official release dateso all we can do now is wait for AMD to decide to drop the commitment.
