Scientists from the US and India are preparing to place a new NISAR satellite into orbit that will allow monitoring of complex geological processes, including movements of the earth’s crust, changes in ocean levels and predicting volcanic eruptions.

This was reported by NASA, Ukrinform reports.

“The NISAR satellite will provide critical information about the earth’s crust, ice sheets and the planet’s ecosystems. Project leader Lori Leshin will enable us to reach a new level of understanding, thanks to the unprecedented accuracy of the NISAR image.”

The new satellite is a joint project of NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization.

The American space agency held a ceremony to send the new satellite’s key instrument, the synthetic aperture radar, to India. It will be launched into orbit in 2024.

As expected, the implementation of the NISAR satellite will be of crucial economic importance. With its help, scientists will be able to predict earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, predict and warn the population about droughts, floods and other natural disasters, monitor events such as forest fires or melting glaciers.

The satellite will orbit the planet every 12 days and survey day and night in all weather conditions and in all terrains.
