Judge Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia of the Colombian First District used the popular ChatGPT chatbot during his sentence in Cartagena. This happened in January, and the truth itself was recorded in court documents. The judge claims he wanted to speed up the decision-making process, so he only asked the AI for specific court case law. The case itself concerned the health insurance company and the family of the autistic child and the child’s health insurance issue.
The judge included the chatbot’s full responses to the decision and added his own understanding of legal case law, noting that artificial intelligence was used to “enhance the case.”
“We really want to optimize the time it takes to make a decision after we validate the information provided by the AI,” Garcia said.
At the same time, although Colombian law does not prohibit the use of AI in court, some judges have criticized this approach. Garcia claims that the chatbot is only used to retrieve data and has no influence on court decisions. However, ChatGPT is notorious for giving incorrect answers, so these should be checked. Source
