According to Roberto Baldoni, the agency’s chief executive, the attack itself was aimed at exploiting a software vulnerability and had a massive scale.
Italian news agency ANSA reported that servers were hacked in the United States and Canada, as well as in other European countries such as France and Finland.
Dozens of Italian organizations are likely to be affected, and many have been warned to take precautions to avoid blocking access to their systems.
US Cybersecurity officials said they are currently assessing the impact of these events.
